The Shyness Boy Story

Delayed by a serious accident in early 2015 and the ongoing pandemic, two lifelong friends and collaborators from San Fernando, CA, have completed an album 8 years in the making.

Shyness Boy (Dennis Benjamin Ibon and Ronald Thomas Suazo) first met as catholic school fifth-graders in 1993 and began writing songs together in the eighth grade.

For over a decade they played in a local band until they split in 2011.

However, Dennis and Ron found it very difficult to carry on without their collaborative partnership.

The Making of Shyness Boy

Work on Shyness Boy’s debut began all the way back in the autumn of 2013. Dennis and Ron held a series of writing and demoing sessions that resulted in an initial slate of over 10 songs.

In early 2015 the duo were ready to record their album in earnest when one was seriously injured in an accident. The subsequent years were largely devoted to the recovery, but the two still strived to continue their work.

Along the way they began experimenting with new sounds, causing them to scrap most of the songs they had written.

Through a combination of Dennis’ use of funk/soul/R&B inspired loops infused with psychedelia and Ron’s fondness for pop melodies and experimental music, the two close friends found an exciting musical direction to guide them towards completing their album.

Making of the Album: 2017-2021

In 2017, Shyness Boy began working out of their creative space, where they excitedly honed in on their new sound. With a little help from their musical friends, they fleshed out many of the tracks that appear on the album.

Recording continued into 2020 when news of the quickly spreading global pandemic hit, resulting in often awkward, fear-filled, socially distanced sessions.

The pair knew they were close to completing the record but were unsatisfied with a few songs, so they took the opportunity to revise them during lockdown.

Whether it remains in obscurity or is loved by many outside of their bubble, the duo’s debut will always be a document of the tough times their friendship has endured.
